The Best Green Smoothie Recipes

Green smoothie recipes can be as simple or as gourmet as you choose. If the term 'green smoothie' is new to you, just know that they are a simple fruit smoothie blended with fresh leafy greens. They are fast and simple to make and add a nutrional powerhouse punch to your diet. By consuming at least one green smoothie a day, you will find that your cravings for less healthy food diminish and if you do nothing else that day that is good for you, you'll know you had your greens!

Ingredients for green smoothie recipes are simple! Fruit and greens. Maybe toss in a little water to get things moving or a few icecubes if you like it cold. That's it. No need to add sugars or oils or powders or milk or anything else you've been accustomed to using in your blender drinks. Digestibility is key so you don't want to be mixing a bunch of different food groups. Fruits and greens play very nicely together when it comes to food combining.

The basic ratio of fruits to greens in green smoothie recipes should be about 60% fruit to 40% greens but if you are just started out, add less green and if you are already a pro, then up your green chorophyll intake and toss in some more. You will want to make it sweet enough that you will enjoy drinking it, but as green as you possibly can.


Basic Green Smoothie Recipes

I almost always have a banana in mine. Bananas add a lovely hint of sweetness and make your smoothie thicker. So

1 banana

1 apple peeled (if not organic) and cored

1 other fruit - mango is fabulous, so are strawberries and pineapple - pick a fruit that you have on hand!

baby spinach - spinach is virtually tasteless in a green smoothie so it is the best green to start with in my opinion. It also lends a fabulous dark green colour to your smoothie.

Start blending the fruit together with some water. Then add your greens. Toss in a leaf a time if you're nervous and taste test along the way or be brave and throw in a handful. Or two or three. Add a few icecubes and voila! Instant living nutrition to drink.
As you are experimenting with your own green smoothie recipes, keep in mind a few thoughts about proper digestion.

It is best to enjoy your green smoothie on an empty stomach. It is not a good idea to have your smoothie with a meal of anything else as this can disrupt the absorbtion of nutrients along with creating some stomach discomforts such as gas and bloating, especially if you are consuming wheat or dairy. Victoria Boutenko from Green for Life recommends waiting 40 minutes before and 40 minutes after.

I don't recommend using anything but water to make your smoothie more liquid, unless you are making your own fresh juices. Commericially prepared juices are heated(pasteurized) and extremely high in sugar. It can be helpful to keep a running list or notebook as you experiment with what you tried, what you liked, what you didn't etc.

I have read that melons for example are best left combined only with other melons and not other fruits.

Smoothies are extremely nutritious and energizing. They are also cleansing and healing to the body and help to alkalize your system. Simply adding a green smoothie a day to your regular diet can result in detoxification, clearer skin, more energy and weight loss as well as reduced cravings for less healthy foods.

Here's a few more green smoothie recipes to give you an idea - there aren't any specific rules here!

1/2 bunch of italian parsely

3 handfuls of baby romaine

3-4 big Kale leaves (I pull the leaves off the stem)

You can easily double up or more depending on how much green smoothie you want to make - or if you have kids wanting some too!

If you do make too much to consume all at once, just put your lid on your blender and pop the decanter into the fridge for later. Just place it back on the blender base for a quick whirl and you'll be ready to go. Green smoothies are best consumed as fresh as possible but if stored in a glass air tight container in the fridge they'll last a good 24 hours.
